Almighty God,
whose only Son has opened for us a new and living way into your presence:
give us pure hearts and steadfast wills to worship you in spirit and in truth;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

1st Reading 1 Kings 19:1-18 (Bible page 361)

Psalm 139

1 O Lord, you have searched me out and known me;
you know my sitting down and my rising up;
you discern my thoughts from afar.
2 You mark out my journeys and my resting place
and are acquainted with all my ways.
3 For there is not a word on my tongue,
but you, O Lord, know it altogether.
4 You encompass me behind and before
and lay your hand upon me.
5 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
so high that I cannot attain it.
12 For you yourself created my inmost parts;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
13 I thank you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
marvellous are your works, my soul knows well.
14 My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was made in secret
and woven in the depths of the earth.
15 Your eyes beheld my form, as yet unfinished;
already in your book were all my members written,
16 As day by day they were fashioned
when as yet there was none of them.
17 How deep are your counsels to me, O God!
How great is the sum of them!
18 If I count them, they are more in number than the sand,
and at the end, I am still in your presence.

IS ANYONE INTERESTED IN A PUB QUIZ?

I have recently established a friendship with Mark and Emma the proprietors at the Good Companions in Hamsey Green and have found them both very sociable. Every Tuesday from 8.00 pm they have a general knowledge quiz night which they are trying to grow. It’s a very relaxed and informal evening and more of a social thing than a serious full on quiz. They currently have around 25 to 30 people involved and its slowly growing. It costs £1.50 per person. It is a great way to mix with local people and develop relationships in a low key way, plus it’s a bit of fun too! So, is anyone interested in joining me in making up a team? I won’t necessarily be able to commit to being available every week, although I would hope to be able drop in for last orders! Contact Andrew Watson on 020 3252 2045 or andrew.email@btopenworld.com for more details. (Please note I am on leave from Sat 4th to 18th September but do drop me an email and I’ll get back to you on my return)

FOR OUR PRAYERS

Morning Prayer is said in church at 9.15am on Monday, Wednesday & Friday. Evening Prayer is said at 4.45pm Monday-Thursday. All are welcome.

St Catherine’s Aisle is set aside for quiet prayer and reflection before the service on a Sunday. You can light a candle if you wish, and other prayer resources are available. Prayer requests can be placed in the request box and will be prayed for at Morning Prayer on Mondays.

Prayer Ministry is offered at the end of each Parish Eucharist.
All of us need more of God’s love and strength in our lives. To assist each one of us, we have a trained team of Prayer Ministers who are available to pray quietly with you. Such prayer – for healing, for forgiveness, or simply to get through the challenges ahead – is always offered in confidence, and in love. Simply go to St Catherine’s Aisle and someone will be there for you.

Prayer Chain: If you would like people to pray for you or for someone else who has asked for prayer, in an emergency or for an ongoing problem, there are 2 Prayer Chains. Prayer will be offered urgently and then regularly for 2 months. To talk about putting a confidential message onto a chain please contact the Parish Office 8657 0665, Julia , or Penny .

For Your Prayers
Church members are asked to remember in their prayers:

Individuals mentioned in the printed notices. All those who are in hospital or recovering at home. For the recently departed, including Don Stokes, John Hamblett and Lois Lorenc.

In the wider world: For the negotiations taking place in Washington between Israeli & Palestinian leaders; for efforts to combat the abuse of alcohol in our society and for those suffering from alcoholism.

Church Groups & Needs: For our housegroups meeting again this week, and especially for the new groups being formed; for our curate Andrew, as he takes holiday, that he would find refreshment and rest; for the Ministry Team as it seeks to find a set of proposals about worship to take to the wider congregation.

Almighty and everlasting God,
you are always more ready to hear than we to pray
and to give more than either we desire or deserve:
pour down upon us the abundance of your mercy,
forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid
and giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask
but through the merits and mediation
of Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen

1 In you, O Lord, do I seek refuge;
let me never be put to shame.
2 In your righteousness, deliver me and set me free;
incline your ear to me and save me.
3 Be for me a stronghold to which I may ever resort;
send out to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress.
4 Deliver me, my God, from the hand of the wicked,
from the grasp of the evildoer and the oppressor.
5 For you are my hope, O Lord God,
my confidence, even from my youth.
6 Upon you have I leaned from my birth,
when you drew me from my mother’s womb;
my praise shall be always of you.

Almighty God, who called your Church to bear witness
that you were in Christ reconciling the world to yourself:
help us to proclaim the good news of your love,

through him who was lifted up on the cross,

1st Reading Ephesians 2:11 - 22 (Bible page 1174)

Psalm 81
1 Sing merrily to God our strength,
shout for joy to the God of Jacob.
2 Take up the song and sound the timbrel,
the tuneful lyre with the harp.
3 Blow the trumpet at the new moon,
as at the full moon, upon our solemn feast day.
4 For this is a statute for Israel,
a law of the God of Jacob,
5 The charge he laid on the people of Joseph,
when they came out of the land of Egypt.
6 I heard a voice I did not know, that said:
‘I eased their shoulder from the burden;
their hands were set free from bearing the load.
7 ‘You called upon me in trouble and I delivered you;
I answered you from the secret place of thunder
and proved you at the waters of Meribah.
8 ‘Hear, O my people, and I will admonish you:
O Israel, if you would but listen to me!
9 ‘There shall be no strange god among you;
you shall not worship a foreign god.
10 ‘I am the Lord your God,
who brought you up from the land of Egypt;
open your mouth wide and I shall fill it.’
11 But my people would not hear my voice
and Israel would not obey me.

CROYDON REFUGEE DAY CENTRE

Having lost our Council Grant, the Centre is desperate for help, particularly with foodstuffs. Most urgent needs are tinned fish, dry pasta, tinned fruit, baked beans and biscuits, although anything is gratefully accepted. Please use the box in the church porch or call Paul James.

Ministry to Children During the Autumn Term

A lack of both children regularly attending church and available leaders has led the Ministry Team to temporarily suspend our Sunday morning ministry to children this term while we consider the best way to serve them in the future. Rest assured, this matter is going to be dealt with during the forthcoming worship review, which will be published in early September.
In the meantime, for those children who find it hard to sit through a service, additional Christian resources will be available for them in St Catherine’s Aisle, which they are welcome to bring into the body of the church if they would prefer. Please feel free to supervise your own children in St Catherine’s; alternatively the leaders in the Children’s Area are happy to keep an eye on them.
We fully appreciate that this is not an ideal solution but would ask everyone to understand that we are working hard to make sure that children and their parents remain as welcome at All Saints’ as they have always been.
More details will be available in early September

TEDDY PRAISE

A short informal service for pre-school children and their carers on Friday 3rd September at 9.30am in St Catharine’s Aisle.

One is for dry mixed recycling - cardboard/paper/newspapers, plastic films & empty plastic bottles, empty steel and aluminium drinks cans and the other bin is for rubbish which cannot be recycled. Please check on our recycling sheet before putting anything in this one.
2. Any dead greenery or flowers may be put on our compost heap in the corner of the graveyard, near Cedar Court entrance. Flower arrangers please note! If grass is too wet to walk on, leave in a bag or sack on the grass by the church vestry door steps and I shall deal with it when possible.
3. Our next LITTER PICK DAY is on Saturday 9th October at 10 a.m. I should be most grateful for any help to improve the area around the church and restore it to its former glory! Ann Turner

Church Meeting Raw Data Feedback: 28th April 2010

1 Sue Chillman’s Group

Pt 1
What do middle age couples prefer? - two prefer SS Light
House group keeps people together

Pt 2
Church football, cricket, netball team
Should we be going out to the community? To bring other people into the church.
Working with the local community?
We have not got a mix of young to old
Change the church to drop in, coffee, worship
How we deliver the message?
How we worship will evolve from the way we become
Our mind sets have to change
Step away from our comfort zone
How we all feel and share faith
We like joy – not enough joy
To have church meetings on a Sunday instead of church service
Cannot change our worship styles until we know what we are changing for
£75k to make a whole community centre

Pt3
Yes
2 Barbara Hill’s Group

Pt1
Not strictly either or – would prefer to carry on with outreach to children – for the future of the church
However too many distractions for youngsters on a Sunday
Reputation of Youth Club – attracts more
Adventurous things need for young people
Need good leader – Holiday club in the summer in Purley = growing congregation
Grandparents/grandchildren have a good rapport therefore good mix
Perhaps a larger banner advertising outside the church about services – like book fair.
More overt social events needed.

Pt2

More advertising
Timing of services even the day we hold them
Sometimes formal sometimes informal as people’s time is very precious these days with many distractions
Most feel the church should stay the same but reach out more to children to ensure the future
eg following baptism.   Opportunities to follow up
Make the church building more flexible – take out the pews. Make it less formal
Christenings during Eucharist services may be off-putting to ‘people not like us’
Could AS Praise be a real informal praise service and have the baptisms then?

Pt 3
Yes we would like you to take us forward by the grace of the Holy Spirit

3 Penny Bird’s Group

Pt 1
Both – new blood, new life - not to do with age - mature Christians and new Christians.
Encourage new Christians
Love of formal /informal worship not age related either
Breadth of worship - more informal more attractive to younger people Christian or not

Pt 2
Families
Bridge gap church/modern world - new blood new life but don’t have loose the exisiting
AS church space doesn’t lend itself to informal worship
New Christians can find worship ‘odd’
Flexibility in welcome down to us all
7 days a week what do we do as a church for the community?
Links with toddlers groups.
What resources has God given us?
Look at what we are gifted to do.  20%SNC volunteers members of AS
Heart to love where we identify a need.
Nurture and grow more mature Christians. Encourage new

Pt 3
9 Yes & 1 think about it
4 Gill Bailey’s Group

Pt 1
Yes we must change to involve young and bring young families to church

Pt 2
Must attract new members
Spread days and times of services
People like us won’t be put off by encouraging people not like us
Shouldn’t be nervous /be put off by change
Focus on young families - also whole families from young to grandparents
Judith said – value spiritual life – Middle age people who need something in their life but can’t reject young families.
Feel ought to try to attract young families but radical change could upset existing congregation.

Pt 3
Yes please helps us to build on what we do well.
Build more and grow more
5 Erin Palmer’s Group

Pt 1
SS Light in church twice a month
Once a month in Gresham School
Less structured
Both services to cater to all
Reaching families
How can we reach the families in Sanderstead?
Pt 2
Change – mission seriously
Prayer for resources
Group of churches funding a youth worker
Mobility of younger families – will travel to other chuhes
Cater to those more limited
Serious teaching to the adults
What other churches have would be hard to compete
Retain the good but develop and new initiatives
Good things about AS
Keep present strengths (thought provoking & challenging sermons) move out from these
Changes
Teens lacking - teenagers going to church elsewhere just not us
New people out of their depth regarding sermons
Other family churches can’t retain older people

Pt 3
Yes, 100% behind you
Great vision
With new people – different takes
Not the same ones that are always on committees etc…
6 Brian Longman’s Group

Pt 1
People not like us
Church going is not the in thing these days
If they are interested they will come to church
Someone’s baby is being Christened, first and only time then leave people not interested
Not simply solvable
What if new congregation – does not integrate with ‘old church’

Pt 2
To get new people in:
Tea and buns every day of the week in the hall
Church always open
Do what St Marys is doing
More tea parties
You can have scouts and guides etc.  but loose them in their teens
We like the school coming here with their parents – more connection with Gresham School
Head teacher and teachers to be more connected with AS
Parsons with wives and families increase congregation sizes – like St Mary’s
If other churches are developing youth that’s fine – we’ll carry on with the over 50s

Pt 3
We didn’t hear clearly what the vision was
We are happy with your leadership
7 Libby Eldridge’ Group

Pt 1
Missed opportunities to advertise what we already do
Need parents with children
Don’t take opportunities at baptisms etc to direct things to children and families
Bring back 2nd Sunday more informal – child friendly

Pt 2
Catering for people like us is doing nothing
Opting out saying there are other churches that cater for children
Should provide more services that are appropriate to children
Harvest, Christmas, Easter, Mothering Sunday as a starting point
Families Sunday’s are taken up with other things
More social events
Provide for both groups
More inviting services

Pt 3
How long is Simon gong to be at AS?
As long as he follows the comments the congregation has made
8 Gillian Prew’s Group

Pt 1
There is a third way
Need a mixture of both groups.
Artificial division of two groups
Don’t fall easily into a group.  Shouldn’t compartmentalise
50 years membership – ‘live in the past’ – Sanderstead was younger/all age
Generations not used to going to church – 2 generations back = gap so church gets older
Its our role to go out to people – not expect them to come to us
We should go into schools!  Good partnership with Gresham so initiative is there – do this alongside our older people
Have choir / club / music activities in school

Pt 2
Not a new dilemma always change and keep some tradition
Big danger in not needing tradition.  People like us – but still some scope for attracting new people in/change.  Too much tampering with current format.  Want services to remain roughly the same
Want informal service on 2nd Sunday of month - to encourage young families
Shouldn’t accept that other churches in the area are exclusively youth/child friendly.  We should look at what we are competing against
Look at rescheduling services to fit in with sporting activities eg earlier service on Sunday or another day to encourage children and their friends.  Get the children in and you will get the parents in.
Quite difficult to resource children’s facilities / Sunday school / youth club – we don’t have a youth worker
We are quite dispersed so don’t walk
Employing a youth worker excluded other parts of congregation (volunteers) – so a mistake so ‘killed of the youth’
Social activities important
Newcomers not always made welcome
Services affected by our particular building and suited to certain sorts of worship.  If thinking about change we are limited by building. But St Catherine’s aisle could be used more flexibly
Should encourage more Lay Readers
Need more Readers and Lay Worshippers
Suggestion: Have 3 services?  Simon – Andrew – Simon.  To allow for 2 formal and 1 informal service.  One of which could be in the hall.  Simon and Andrew don’t have to double up.
Pt 3
What time is he with us?
Is there time left to do what he wants to do – 2 years?
He will stay if he has our faith, energy and backing
Growth is good / Leadership / Greater spirituality but difficult to …(blank)
Growth and confidence to be inspired by house groups
How to grow in confidence?
Is it a vote of confidence in Simon?
9 Jean Harris’ Group

Pt 1
AS is for everyone
Increase SS Light services – everyone in church 2nd Sunday
Put in CCTV – ability to use modern equipment in church as required
Two services – formal choral Eucharist alongside an informal
Widening this out to a Parish basis ie St Ant’s
Where is our Good Friday activity
St Mary’s new community centre
Member of group came on Easter Sunday – first time – did not understand what was going on
Good Friday – like St Ant’s
More exploration

Pt 2
Blank

Pt 3
For you to lead us
10 Lynne Davison’s Group

Pt 1
Methodist Church has had a drive to encourage youngsters without success
Why should young people who are at another church leave that church and come to AS when they get older.
People travel to the church they wish to worship at not necessarily in their ‘parish’

Pt 2
Aim should be at young parents as at toddler groups
Not equipped to deal with children
Stick at what we are good at

Pt 3
Some uncomfortable with the question and feel ‘pistol’ to the head
Needs people to stand up be prepared to share their faith and give testimony and learn from the clergy
11 Kris Atkinson’s Group

Pt 1 & Part 2
£75,000 is irrelevant, issue of commitment
Churches that do not attract young families go into decline
All Saints is not a child friendly place, this has been relayed by people outside of All Saints (feedback from Gresham school)
Fear that “people like us” excludes racial and sexual minorities and anyone “down the hill”
Feel that Simon’s introduction was biased in favour of “people like us”, specifically that “challenge” sounds onerous and we should not be afraid of a challenge - “we are not called to take the easy route”.  If we focus on “people like us” in 10yrs time we will just have an older and smaller population
People “not like us” was “us” 10 yrs ago
700 children live within 1km of All Saints
Would young families want to come, would they rather go to Ikea?
if we focus on attracting new people we risk losing those who already come
Majority were in favour of more services rather than replacing those currently in place
Not only older people who get isolated, young and old, married and single, with families and without all need to be part of our mission.  Focus on age is wrong.

Pt 3
Seemed to be confusion about this part of your address and the group gravitated back to earlier discussion points but overwhelming sense from entire is discussion was “absolutely”.

12 Arnold Butler’s Group

Pt 1
Whilst the two different focus ideas were claimed to be well understood, several in the Group thought they needed more information – specifically around how each focus would look in operation.
The idea of using the £75,000 funding availability to employ a specialist minister – for work with families or with the elderly was not picked up (not heard)
The Group found the challenge of choosing a priority focus for mission very hard to contemplate -  we were all God’s family and should strive to find a better balance so that there could be mutual support.
The Group seemed to think that at All Saints’, in particular, a focus on People Like Us would actually be a recipe for accelerated decline and thought People Unlike Us would bring new ideas and stimulate fresh thinking.

Pt 2
Every individual is a part of God’s family - we have lots of talent at All Saints’ which needs to be encouraged to grow spiritually and harnessed for the corporate good.
We should not underestimate what has been achieved with recent initiatives – the Sanderstead Light Team need to be congratulated – improving our links with Gresham has been important and fruitful.
A major point of discussion was how we could review and improve our corporate communication with the community at large. Can’t rely on people coming to All Saints’. – words like advertising, marketing were mentioned, as too, Services on the Gruffy, ad hoc events, ‘On the Beeches ‘– delivered to every door to attract enquirers.
No appetite within the Group to focus on one Mission outreach but accept need to find a better balance with recognition within the Group that this meant accepting change and making sacrifices themselves – example offered of rescheduling of  Services  -  17.00 on a Sunday  perhaps a better time for younger people to meet.

Pt 3
Unanimous vote of confidence in Simon’s leadership
13 Charlotte Brooks’s Group

Pt1
No agreement on way forward
Some accept need for change but most don’t
A mission would help galvanise us into action
No wish to focus on one group in particular
Make more of Cornerstone
Tea and buns daily
School – Gresham
Scouts and Brownies - ASP
3rd way
2nd Sunday informal
3 services
Readers
Youth worker discourage volunteers
Missed opportunities
Clergy visits to SNC and toddlers

Pt 2
(blank)

Pt 3
Will we let him lead us into this sort of future - but still need help
Our structures are critical
Once discussed we will follow
