RICHARD’S ORDINATION AS PRIEST
Sunday 26th September, 11am, Southwark Cathedral
As many of you will be aware, I am being ordained priest on Sunday, September 26th at 11 a.m. at Southwark Cathedral. I’d be delighted to see as many of you there as would like to come. I anticipate having a number of tickets which will enable the holders to have a good view of the ceremony, which will include the Eucharist. If you would like one of these tickets, please sign the list at the back of the church. Whether or not you are able to come to the cathedral, I would appreciate your prayerful support for both myself and Anne, my wife. May I also take this opportunity to thank you for the way in which you have already welcomed me into the family of St Mary’s and for the way in which you have supported me in my year as a deacon. Richard Ford
Richard will preside at the Eucharist for the first time as we celebrate Harvest in a Festival Family Eucharist on Sunday 3rd October, followed by a church lunch to celebrate this special moment.
If you are able to help with this, please let our churchwardens Debbie or Paul know, and, everyone, please put this special day for St Mary’s in your diary now, and join in. Thank you. James
MUSIC IN OUR SUNG EUCHARIST IN SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER
We are going to try a refreshing approach to music in our Sung Eucharist in September and October. This need not alarm those of us who are devoted to the liturgy and to the beauty and power of choral and organ music, because these will remain central, and evensong will not be affected. But the occasional use of other instruments, chants and songs in a variety of styles can enrich and further open up the Eucharist and, I trust, help more people to encounter God through it. We have already been doing this with songs from the Celtic tradition. St Paul taught in his letter to the church in Ephesus (5:19) that spiritual songs belong together with hymns and psalms in our worship. We will also be learning to use a new setting of the sung parts of the Eucharist.
Please approach this with a positive and outward-looking spirit, which will be important in helping God to grow St Mary’s as we move forwards. I would be grateful for any offers of help with this from anyone who can play any instrument well, or sing: offers to me, or to Fred please Thank you. James
HELPING TO PREPARE FOR AND SERVE IN WORSHIPPING THE LORD
Oliver Jackson, after 12 years of devoted service to St Mary’s, will be stepping down as sacristan and head server on 10th October. He has performed several unsung but important roles with great faithfulness and distinction, and I hope that we can move forwards by recruiting several people to work together to fulfil these tasks with a new spirit. They are all significant in helping people who come to St Mary’s, as the hymn puts it, to ‘worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness’, and in enabling a wide range of people to take roles in our worship.
We need to take this as an opportunity to share these responsibilities much more widely. To be able to maintain and build on the things we cherish in our worship here, we need people to take the following roles:
• Head Server (leading, training and growing our team of servers)
• Sacristan (ensuring supplies of bread, wine, candles, oil etc.)
• Keeping the permanent candle lights burning
• Moving chairs around for the Eucharist as necessary, & Evensong
• Care of linen, silver and wood
• Preparing our rota of duties in worship, in liaison with the vicar
• Preparing for Baptisms
• Writing up the Marriage registers
• Working together to get church ready for Christmas & Holy Week
• The specialist construction of either or both of the Advent Ring and the Christmas Crib
• Leading Evening Prayer on 1st Sunday in the month, and August
I am praying that God will stir up enough people, and confident that this prayer will be answered (positively) – so please do offer, we need you. I am open at this stage as to how this valuable work is best shared.
A willingness to serve and work with others in following Jesus, and a sense of humour, are more important than experience or length of time at St Mary’s, though these can also be valuable.
If you can offer your gifts to contribute in this area, or would like to talk further about any of these roles, please do get in touch with me.
Thank you. James
St Mary’s project to transform the old vestry areas for wider use of our church building is moving forwards…
I hope that the whole church community has now received a personal update letter about this project. If you have not, please help yourself to a spare one from the porch, with a leaflet and pledge form as appropriate. Please make send further pledges to Tim Crump by 12th August if possible, and / or get involved in other ways. There will be a further presentation at our Patronal Festival Eucharist at 10am on Sunday 12th September (followed by BBQ). Please put in your diary now!
FUND-RAISING EVENTS– we have already had several offers of possible activities, from cake-making to an auction of promises. If you can contribute in this way to our effort, please let me know, or one of our churchwardens, Paul or Deborah. Thanks, James
