LOCAL HISTORY - BUILDINGS

Within and on the Parish Boundaries, there are number of buildings which once played a major part within our local history. Many of these buildings have long since been replaced by other properties but some still remain. The oldest building in Sanderstead Parish which still exists today is the “White House”. For many years it was owned by local farmers. It has also appeared in the Daily Mail Ideal Home Exhibition Magazine.

In the early 1900’s a Local Historian who lived next door to the White House remembers that “In this year, there was a bad cold winter. There was over a foot of ice on the pond. The Farmer at the White House had trouble reaching his Sheep as many of the fields on Riddlesdown where cut off by the snow. He pulled off one of the large doors from the barn behind the house and myself and a few others helped him to pull it along like a sledge to reach his sheep.” Sadly, these barns were destroyed by a fire but were replaced.

Today the original house and the barns, which have been converted into properties still remain. Other properties that still exist are the original post office which was more of a general store, the old saw mill which is now used by Sanderstead Cricket Club and the Old Blacksmiths which is now the Holy Family Catholic church hall. In Hamsey Green, the first original houses, which used to be part of a farm still exist and also Butts farm still operates today.
