For marriages at St. Mary’s Church, Sanderstead. Please contact the church directly at the present time.

The following information is for All Saints’ Parish Church, Sanderstead, St. Edmund’s, Riddlesdown and St. Antony’s, Hamsey Green. As you can imagine, there are a number of legal formalities which have to be dealt with, but above all we are concerned to make the service an occasion which is memorable, and which you can enjoy in its full Christian significance.

In our age, the pressures of life make marriage a difficult path to tread. Yet we are aware that many people today are recognising the danger of a wholly materialistic attitude and do not want to squeeze God out of their lives. We trust that your married life together will be long and happy and we believe that with God’s help and strength it can start off on the best possible footing. To that end, please be aware that we shall be praying for you as you prepare for marriage and that this Church (and the Church of England wherever you might be living) is there to support you in your married life and in your individual journey through life.

Please read the information below carefully: hopefully it answers many of your questions! It also sets out how and when we will need to meet with you to plan your wedding service details and explain the significance of the different parts of the service to you.

We would also like to invite you to come on any Sunday morning at 9.30am to see All Saints’ “at work”, to get a feel of the building when it is in use and meet some of the people who make up the Church family.

In the meantime, we trust that all your preparations go smoothly.

First things First!

Firstly before you go rushing into announcing a date etc for your wedding, please contact or visit the Parish Office on Monday’s 8.00pm to 9.00pm. If you wish to book a date for your wedding, we suggest that you come prepared with three possible dates.

There are a number of reasons for this. Firstly, weddings are very popular at All Saints’ Church and people do book well in advance. We suggest that you start planning your date at least six months beforehand. Secondly, the Church may not be available to you on your desired date.

We also recommend that you look at the timing of your wedding carefully. The last thing you want is to be rushing around trying to be ready in time or the opposite, waiting around. You should really plan your day around the service and what distance the majority of your quests are travelling. If your guests are living locally, an earlier time may suit where if they are travelling long distances, you may need a later time.

Please note that All churches within the NEW Sanderstead Team Ministry can hold Marriage Services.

Booking your Marriage

When you come to book your marriage, you will be required to bring or do the following:

  • We must see proof of residence of one you in the parish. (recent bank statement or a recent official letter)
  • Both of your Full names
  • Your Occupations
  • Ages
  • Full names of your Parents (please check spelling for example, is your father’s middle name Stephen or Steven?) please check.
  • *Any changes of address, occupation or circumstances need to be notified to us. Please note that once you have booked your date and time, these can only be changed after you have had agreement from us – and with the new arrangements confirmed in writing.

You will be given a booklet, which covers more information at this point.

Preparing for Marriage

As well as all the practical details that need attention we also want to help you to think about the meaning and significance of marriage. We will therefore ask you to come to a “Preparing for Marriage” day in the first half of the year. We run this day on two different Saturdays each year (from 10.30am to 4.00pm) and ask you to come on the day most convenient to you.

Banns of Marriage

Banns of Marriage are a legal requirement, which must be carried out before you can marry. Banns within the Parish of Sanderstead are called out here on three consecutive Sundays at the 9.30am service. You will be given these by the marriage team or clergy.

If you both live in the Parish: we simply call your banns here as a result of your visit to us.

If only one of you lives in our Parish: We call the banns here and you must arrange for them to be called in the other parish as well. They may only be called in Church of England churches and should be called at least six weeks before your wedding.

Where both of you live outside the parish, but one or other has the right to be married at the Parish of Sanderstead by virtue of being on the Electoral Roll of this parish: The banns must be called in the places of residence as well as here.

If, as a non-resident, you change your address and subsequently your parish church after booking a wedding, you must notify us and arrange for the banns to be read at the new Parish church.

As soon as the banns have been called in the other parish(es) you must collect the Banns Certificate and hand it to the Parish Office at least 10 days before the date of the wedding.

Please remember there is a charge for having you banns read at any church.

IF YOUR BANNS CERTIFICATE IS NOT RETURNED BY THE DATE OF THE WEDDING IT CANNOT TAKE PLACE.

Photo’s and Video Recording

Photo’s are NOT permitted in Church during the ceremony but can be taken afterwards. However, your official photographer may take a timed exposure photograph, without flash, from the back of the church during the ceremony.

Video recording of the wedding service is permitted, as long as the following procedures are followed and points noted. This note is issued by the Rector to give permission for recording equipment to be brought into the church to record the service, subject to the following conditions:

  • The whole service must be filmed and not just parts of it
  • The equipment must operate without the use of special lighting and cables and be inaudible in use
  • The camera must be situated either at the back of the church under the tower or beside the organ behind the choir stalls
  • There must be no movement of the camera from the entry of the bride until she and her husband move to sign the register.
  • The law of copyright is complex: neither the Rector nor the Church Council has any authority to give copyright permission for the reproduction of any work, which is protected by copyright. Copyright permission is granted by the copyright holders of the service for recording that without further permission being sought, provided
  • No copies may be sold commercially (except to the couple or parents who commissioned the recording)
  • No more than three copies of the recording may be made
  • No recording may be exhibited in public
  • This permission does not extend to the recording of music or hymns.

Copyright remains with a work until the end of a period of 50 years from the end of the calendar year in which the author and/or composer died. Detailed advice about copyright is available from:

  • The Mechanical Copyright Protection Society Ltd.
  • Elgar House
  • 41 Streatham High Road
  • LONDON SW16 1ER Telephone 020 8769 4400

* Please note: an additional fee of £50.00 is payable to the organist for the recording of his/her performance. This is payable with the other fees. In these days of camcorder usage, we have decided to charge this amount to all couples, whether you are planning a professional video or not. Should your guests not use a camcorder, we will refund this amount to you after the service.

It is essential that any recordist has read and signed a declaration form which is enclosed in your booklet. This should be returned to the parish office at the same time your fees are paid. These arrangements may seem ponderous but are designed to ensure that you have a dignified and memorable service, (with no distractions) that is at the same time recorded for later use – and which works within some very complex laws.

The Order of Service

You will find set out below a guide for the preparation of an Order of Service. The headings in bold type should appear in the order: the other headings are for your information. Please discuss your service with the clergy who is to marry you before you have them printed.

If you are not having an Order printed, we do ask you to provide a sheet with the text of the hymns printed out.

It is a good idea to appoint Ushers to show guests to their seats and to distribute order of services

Flowers at the Service

All arrangements for the provision of flowers can be made in good time by the Church Flower organiser. For providing one pedestal of flowers, we ask for a contribution of £37.50. If you would like more flowers this can be discussed. If there is more than one wedding on the day we usually pass your contact number to the other couple in case you want to negotiate flower colour and costs together. Please inform us immediately if you do not want a contact number to be given out to another couple.

If your wedding is taking place in the Church Seasons of Advent or Lent, please be aware that is our custom not to have flowers in church, however, you are welcome to arrange for your own flowers in church, but they must be removed at the end of the service.
