ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH LYTCHGATE
“Lytchgate - a roofed gate to a church yard, formerly used as a temporary shelter for the bier.”
The lytchgate at Sanderstead Parish Church today is the original, however it was moved from it’s original siting in the 1920/30’s. The original siting was towards the gruffy and pond area. As you can see from this picture, before the days of Onslow gardens, the footpath which still goes around the pond, used to lead up towards the church.
Works have been carried out to the gate. Firstly, there is now electrical lighting instead of a gas or candle lamp. Secondly by looking at the pictures we have, the tiles and edging have been replaced. In 2003, works have also carried out to the woodwork and gates.
